Barry S. Goldwater Scholarship

About
Scholarships founded in 1986 by the U.S. Congress to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater from Arizona which serve to encourage excellence in math and science.  Funded by the U.S. Government, Goldwater Scholarships are awarded to outstanding college juniors and seniors who are pursuing careers in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering.

Award
Up to $7500 annually to cover tuition, fees, books, room & board.  Funds may supplement other scholarship monies the student is already receiving but will not duplicate them.

Time
Junior applicants who receive the scholarship for their senior year will only receive one year of funding.  Successful sophomore applicants will receive funding for their junior year and may be able to renew the scholarship for their senior year.

Number
About 300 per year.  In 2007, 317 awards were given from an applicant pool of 1,110.

Who’s Eligible
Full-time students in their sophomore or junior year at an accredited institution who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents (with intent to obtain citizenship), or U.S. nationals with a “B” average in college and in the top fourth of their class.  Applicants must be pursuing a career in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering; the Goldwater website lists examples of majors and career plans for past scholars if you are unsure your field qualifies.

Selection  Process
Highly competitive.  In addition to academic excellence, successful applicants show an outstanding potential for and demonstrated commitment to a career in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering.

Application Process
The Goldwater application is made available on the Goldwater website in September. UT Goldwater applicants must submit their online application, essay, and at least two of the three required letters of reference (online) in the fall before Thanksgiving weekend. A campus committee will meet to review all applicants before making decisions concerning university nomination. UT is allowed to nominate up to four students each year in the Goldwater competition.

Final application due late January (see the ONSF Calendar for specific dates). In addition to the university nomination and official application form, applicants must submit an essay and three faculty recommendations.
